President Visits Juan N. Seguin School Houston I.S.D.

President Julia Aguilar, SFHS,
Given Private Tour of Juan N. Seguin School, Houston I.S.D.

July 31, 2002

Principal Rhelda Ball, pictured above, personally conducted a tour of the new Juan N. Seguin Elementary School for Julia Aguilar, 2nd Great Grand Daughter of Senator Juan N. Seguin, (www.seguinfamilyhistory.com).

The Seguin Family Historical Society presented Principal Ball with a beautifully framed portrait of Juan N. Seguin. The portrait was painted by Henry Godines of California and is a replica of the original portrait painted in 1838 by Jefferson Wright which was commissioned by President Sam Houston of the Republic of Texas and presented to Juan Seguin.

"Juan N. Seguin is truly a state of the art educational center" stated Mrs. Aguilar. "The children from pre-kindergarten to 5th graders will have a definite advantage in this futuristic learning environment", she added. Each room is equipped with personal computers, and wireless lap top computers, live video conferencing from classroom to classroom with drop down ceiling screens are just part of the vast network that is technically superior and a tremendous aid to the teaching staff.

New concepts for making the learning process more interesting and even fun, have been developed and implemented. The Building architecture is not only beautiful but easy to navigate. The school is built in "Pods", each learning center has its' own entrance and common lobby with skylights for natural light . The floor coverings in the lobbies are brilliant squares of color which impart an atmosphere of warmth and happiness.

It is a well known fact that Juan Seguin was a great proponent of higher education. As a child, Juan and his Mother, would teach Indian children at the local mission to read and write. Juan's father, Don Erasmo Seguin, donated a building and money to create the first formal public classroom in Texas.

During the tour Principal Ball just seemed to glow with enthusiasm and burst with pride and joy over what she has contributed to the implementation of this new HISD School. That same enthusiasm was encountered throughout the staff from the K1 educators to the 5th grade educators. The project manager, Mr. Doug Fyfe, of Heery International Inc., was most informative and took a few minutes to explain some of the details of the school. The building plan has obviously been very carefully designed and planned from the state of the art equipment to the mini-amphitheater reading area in the library, to the washer and dryer to care for wee accidents.

"A Work in Progress"

There are two mural presently being painted in the front lobby by Jessie Sifuentes . Mr. Sifuentes is a Spanish teacher at Austin High School and has a passion for painting. The murals will be a history lesson depicting Juan Seguin and his contributions to Texas and his pivotal role in helping Texas to be a Free and Independent Country.

Mrs. Elizabeth Dow, the school secretary, conducted part of the tour with such pride and is so looking forward to the bell ringing for the first day of school announcing a new era in education for the youngest of our future leaders. Mrs. Pat Alexander, Data Entry department, visited with Mrs Aguilar and she too expressed such pride in the new school and also looks forward to the school opening and commencing it contribution to the districts youngest residents.

The Houston Independent School District, the principal and all the staff at The Juan N. Seguin Elementary School are to be commended for their vision in transforming an idea into reality.

"All the tools are in place....... the school exemplifies the bright future the students have in store for them", said Albert Seguin Gonzales, who also attended the special tour. He is the 3rd great grandson of Colonel Juan N. Seguin.

Mrs. Ball is such a delight and has such a love for the new Juan N. Seguin School; the children will certainly be the benefactors of her experience, caring and zeal for education at it's best.
