Juan Seguin was born to an old land-owing family who believed in personal freedoms, education and committed to the creation of Texas as a state separate from the State of Coahuila. His father Don Erasmo had served as Post Master under Spanish rule, and the family Rancho "Casa Blanca" a nine-thousand-acre tract near present day Floresville, about a day's ride from San Antonio, became known for its hospitality far and wide.

Stephen F. Austin spent much of his time at the ranch, and the relationship between Austin and Don Erasmo Seguin grew into a lifetime of friendship.

It was in their company that young Juan Seguin became interested in politics.
