General Ignacio Seguin - ZaragozaCol. Juan Nepomuceno Seguin
The hero of the Battle of Puebla, was born March 24, 1829, in Goliad Texas, which was then known as La Bahia del Espiritu Santo.
Son of Miguel G. Zaragoza and Maria de Seguin.
Ignacio joined Mexico's national army. In 1853 he earned a promotion to Captain.
He fought in the Battle of Saltillo against centralist armies of Santa Anna, (sound familiar), in 1856 he defended the city of Monterrey
and in 1857 he and his army fought in defense of the Mexican Constituion of 1857.
In 1860 he earned the rank of commander of the military forces at Guadalajara, at the end of that year he was promoted to field marshal.
In 1861, Zaragoza was named Minister of War an office he resigned from in December to accept command of Mexico's Army of the East
in battle against the interventionist.
He then succeeded in halting the advance of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862
a very significant victory for the nationalist which became one of the most important eventes in Mexican History.
What great fun it was to be in Golaid! The friendly people are outstanding in their community spirit and in the celebration of a native son.
The arts and crafts booth were chuck full of great stuff, and the food was just wonderful!
The day could not have been more perfect for such a celebration and of course the parade - was sooooooo much fun!
