October 27, 2001: In historic Seguin, Texas, Seguin descendants gathered at the Burial Site of Col. Juan Nepomuceno Seguin (across from the Coliseum, corner of Austin St. & Guadalupe St.) There, under the great arbor of ancient oaks, the group was greatly surprised to see Juan Seguin's friend Davy Crockett descend 'out of the mist' to speak to them about their heroic ancestor. The surprise had been arranged by Albert Seguin Carvajal Gonzales (Founder of the Seguin Family Historical Society). At the conclusion of his speech, Crockett presented Albert with an original Eight Reales Coin which had been minted in Mexico City when Juan Seguin's father, Erasmo, was there on government business. There were representatives from the Living History Re-enactors, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Alamo Legacy & Mission Association, and Daughters of the American Revolution, who contributed to the program, as did Seguin Family Historical Society President Julia Garcia-Aguilar and Mayor Mark Stautzenberger.

When cannons were fired in salute, the impressive ceremony concluded and all proceeded to the SEGUIN CENTRAL PARK downtown for the 1st Annual Dedication Ceremony of the magnificent statue of Col. Seguin on horseback. A panoramic photo was taken of the Seguin Family in front of the statue. (It was particularly touching when Albert and Mr. J.B. Kline, the SFHS Press Release Administrator & Public Information Officer, insisted that "Davy" stand-in with the family for this historic record.)

Col. Rush and his wife, Shirley T. Rush, were warmly welcomed to join the procession from Seguin Central Park to beautiful Nolte Island where, in the midst of a majestic pecan tree grove, the Seguin Family Reunion and Picnic were held. Col. Rush was presented with a Seguin Medallion bearing a striking cameo likeness of Juan N. Seguin. The food was of a great variety and delicious. There were many thoughtful presentations as family members were recognized for their contributions, elders were paid sincere respect, family ties were proudly announced and it made a good time for young and old alike.

The love, family pride, and shared grace of this family for each other and their guests was deeply touching and of all 'Crockett appearances'....THIS was the most meaningful and lasting by far! What a fitting tribute to Juan N. Seguin's legacy on his Birthday.
