Juan N. Seguin High School Dedication

Red Carpet Treatment!

The Seguin Family members instructions were to be out front of the Wyndham Hotel at 12:15 P.M. on Sunday November 10th. That we were not to leave the Wyndham to go to the school until precisely 12:30. Guess who's instructions those were, Maria Alvarado, of course.

At approximately 12:20 a very long white limousine drove up and asked for the Seguin party that was to be chauffeured to the Juan N. Seguin High School.

Now, I must admit I had been sort of filled in by Maria about the limo, it was one of those "on a need to know bases." It was still a very nice surprise and was told that anyone could ride but that the Officers of The Seguin Family Historical Society, Julia Garcia, Juries Anne Seguin and Albert Seguin Gonzales were to be in that limo when it arrived at the school., yes Ma'am !

Being one to follow instructions, we rounded everyone up and decided that the following members would ride in the limo:
Gilbert Seguin Alexander
Julie Wiley Davis
Albert Seguin Gonzales
Juries Anne Seguin
Chaz Austin Sepulveda
Corbin Alexander Sepulveda
Christian Allen Sepulveda
Rosie Luna Wiley
Melinda Sue Wiley
Jon Seguin Wright
Gabriella Nicole Ybarra

The following family members followed:
Stephanie Seguin Hartman
Frank Luna
Charles Sepulveda
Rhonda Sepulveda
Maria Cortez Ybarra
Tony Ybarra
Dr. J. B. Kline
(several others followed, sorry, we have not yet received their info)

Wouldn't you know it, precisely at 12:45 the limo pulls up to the beautiful new Juan N. Seguin High School and a crowd of very handsome people awaited us with a "Red Carpet" extended to the limo!

As we exited the limo we were all somewhat stunned by such a beautiful gesture of respect, not necessarily for us, but as representatives of a Man who Loved Texas and fought for her independence.

It was a very impressive welcoming by the Arlington School Board members, Principal Farmer, his staff, and countless others. What Wonderful, Loving and Friendly Fellow Texans.

I must admit that for me personally, it was a very humbling experience and one I will never forget. Prior to the dedication program, a reception was held in the new library, what a library, and what a reception! The fellowship was wonderful, just like old friends.

Emily Priest a student at JSHS played classical music for everyone's entertainment.

Dr. J. Frank de la Teja,(L) presented Principal Farmer,(R) with a copy of the 2nd addition release of his book,
"A Revolution Remember" The Memoirs and Selected Correspondence of Juan N. Seguin.

During the reception the family had an opportunity to meet several other family members. Surprisingly enough, in the first graduating class, there will be a Juan Seguin Descendant, Mr. Daniel Seguin of Arlington.

Principal Ed Farmer and Mrs. Maria Alvarado were each presented with a large photo of the Statue of Juan Seguin. The presentation was made on behalf of the Seguin Family by Albert Seguin Gonzales.

The program was beautifully executed and many wonderful and inspiring words were conveyed to all in attendance. The entire program was so informative, from the Prelude by the JSHS Band, the Invocation, Principal Ed Farmer's Welcome and Introductions , Erich Ramsey's remarks, to the remarks by Superintendent Dr. Mac Bernd, Mayor Elzie Odom reading the City of Arlington's Proclamation, to the Juan Seguin High School Fight Song, what a Great Day in recognition of a Great Texas Hero!

Following the dedication celebration, an open house hosted by the Juan Seguin High School was held.
The food was abundant, beautifully prepared and delicious.

During the open house, the award winning JSHS band once again entertained everyone with beautiful and spirited music. They certainly were well rehearsed and so very professional. Those young people and their instructor are to be commended for their dedication to their music.

All good things must come to an end, we were all so very honored and so very grateful for all of the hospitality and friendship extended to us all.

Mrs. Maria Alvarado made the following comments and I feel compelled to share those inspiring words:
"A lot of us in the community worked very hard to get this new school named for Texas Hero Juan Seguin. But today I salute the Heroes of tomorrow who walk these halls and attend classes everyday. I also salute the teachers who will teach and guide them to be our heroes of tomorrow."

A portrait of Juan Nepomuceno Seguin sits on the stage at Juan Seguin High School as Robert Rhodes, far left, gives the benediction Sunday at the school's formal dedication. Members of the Seguin's family as well as Arlington school district faculty members and Arlington Mayor Elzie Odom attended the event in the school's auditorium. At left, Albert Seguin Gonzales, a descendant of Seguin, speaks about Juan Seguin at the dedicaton. Juan Seguin's family donated a portrait of him to the school.

The Arlington Independent School District Board of Trustees, AISD Administration, The JSHS Administration and The Parent Teacher Association are to be praised for their hard work and dedication. The School is a state of the art school and the opportunities limitless for the students that are, and will be attending, The Juan Seguin High School.
Principal Ed Farmer is not only a former US Navy Seal, but a true administrator with the knowledge that he holds the future of those young minds in his very grasp. The staff, obviously carefully handpicked, are as enthusiastic and as dedicated to the education of those young people as is Principal Farmer.
